Obituary

George Samuel Berkompas age 84 of McBain passed way on April 17, 2024 at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids with his loving family at his side. He was born on January 1, 1940 in Sault Ste Marie to George and Elizabeth (Ploegstra) Berkompas. He married Lois Ann Hoekwater on April 13, 1962 at the Calvin Christian Reformed Church.

He had driven truck for Alvan Motor Freight for many years. He was a member of the Vogel Center Christian Reformed Church. He enjoyed traveling, biking, reading historical and fictional books, wood working and gardening. He enjoyed going to the coffee shop in the mornings to have coffee with his many friends.

He is survived by his wife; Lois Ann Berkompas, children; Cheryl (John) Quist of McBain and Marcia Berkompas of McBain, daughter-in-law; Kim Berkompas of Falmouth, 7 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, sister; Janet Meyer of Grand Haven, in-laws; Nancy Berkompas of Rudyard and Janice Berkompas of Nashville, TN.

He was preceded in death by a son; Mark Berkompas, grandson; Jacob Berkompas, sisters; Ruth Berkompas and Wilma (Bill) Lenger, brothers; Howard (Beth) Berkompas, Ted Berkompas, and Edward (Julie) Berkompas, brother-in-law; Paul Meyer.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 22, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at the Vogel Center Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Adam Barton officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, April 21, 2024 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Burkholder Family Funeral Home in McBain and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will take place in the Riverside Township Cemetery, Missaukee County. A luncheon will be held after the services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Josh & Mandy Shaarda in-care of Freedom in Christ.
