Obituary

Florence "Flo" Louise Nye, passed away at the age of 92 on January 5, 2024. She was born February 23, 1931, in Dearborn, Michigan to Louis and Helen (Abraham) Olah. Florence grew up in Dearborn and graduated from Lowrey High School in 1949. In the fall of that same year, she married Percy Louis "Lou" Nye, who would be her husband for 67 years. Lou and Flo settled in nearby Allen Park where they raised their two children, Daniel and Diane. A move in 1976 brought them to the Cadillac area and their Tustin home. Cherished neighbors met along the way became lifelong friends.

Prior to her retirement, Flo enjoyed a lengthy career working in the southeastern Michigan administrative offices of U.S. Pool Car and later in the newsroom of Northern Michigan's TV 9&10. Yet, it was time spent keeping her home that brought Florence her greatest satisfaction. Everyone was welcomed there. Holiday gatherings became events. Pies made with fruit gathered from the surrounding woods were a specialty. Flo was once recognized in the Cadillac area as "Homemaker of the Year."

Retirement years were lengthy and filled with good health, travel near and far, community involvement, and hobbies. Flo was a founding member of the Wexford County Herb Society and member of South Community United Methodist Church. She served on the Osceola Township board and was active in the local chapter of John Deere's Two-Cylinder Club.

Florence is survived by her daughter Diane (William) Nye Mattick, daughter-in-law Irma Nye, grandchildren Douglas (Rebecca) Nye, Danielle (Gary Hamilton) Nye, Rachel Sammon and Sarah (Joseph) Wolanin, eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, sister Shirley (Arthur) Winkel of Plymouth, and sister-in-law Nancy Olah of New Boston. She was preceded in death by her husband, son, parents, and siblings Louis, Esther, Ethel, Edith, Robert, Marguerite, and Albert.

Following a private service, Florence will be laid to rest with her husband and son in Cedarville, Michigan. Flo loved animals and cared for many throughout her lifetime. Those wishing to make donations in her honor may contact the Michigan Humane Society at michiganhumane.org/tributes.
