Obituary

Alan Bruce Lucas, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully in Suttons Bay on May 29, 2026. He was born on November 9, 1951, in Cadillac, Michigan, to Adrian and Gertrude (Dowlyn) Lucas.

A graduate of McBain High School and Michigan State University, Alan spent most of his life in Highland Township near McBain. He grew up on, and later owned and operated, the Lucas family dairy farm, where he and his former wife Pamela Locke raised his three daughters. He took great pride in caring for his herd and stewarding land that had been in his family for generations.

Never afraid to try something new, Alan was an early adopter of innovative conservation farming practices, including pasture-raised dairy cattle, and approached life with a fun-loving spirit that generated endless stories. He loved animals and nature, especially his dogs and the forests he explored throughout his life. Curious by nature, he had a wide-ranging store of knowledge that colored his irreverent, philosophical view on life. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and larger-than-life personality.

Alan is survived by his daughters, Angie (Scott) Bouma of Cedar, Sarah Lucas of Traverse City, and Katy Lucas of Traverse City; his grandchildren, Finch Moore, Aspen Moore, Asher Lucas-Cuddeback, and Ari Bouma; his siblings, Mary Jo (Greg) Blackmer and Jon Lucas; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends in Michigan and Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Adrian and Gertrude Lucas, and his sister, Becky Phillips.

The family is very grateful for the care provided by the staff of Medilodge of Leelanau and Munson Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Munson Hospice. The family is having a graveside burial at Highland Hillside Cemetery. Arrangements are being made with Burkholder-Nielsen Funeral Home of McBain.
